With of 141 litres per capita of bottled water per year, Portugal is among the top countries in Europe in terms of bottled water consumption. According to figures from Eurostat only 35% of the total goes to recycling channels and the rest remains unrecycled. What’s worse according to the environmental association Zero, is that Portugal only recycled 12% of plastic from urban waste.
The average bottled water consuming household in Portugal consumes almost 1000 bottles per year generating 250 kg CO2 footprint, 50 kg of plastic waste and 2000 L of water wasted. This is crazy considering that 99.5% of public tap water in Portugal is safe to drink according to strict EU standards. The main reasons for choosing bottled water given by consumers is taste and concerns about the quality of tap water.
