El Corte Ingles joins the fight against bottled water with TAPP

With of 141 litres per capita of bottled water per year, Portugal is among the top countries in Europe in terms of bottled water consumption. According to figures from Eurostat only 35% of the total goes to recycling channels and the rest remains unrecycled. What’s worse according to the environmental association Zero, is that Portugal only recycled 12% of plastic from urban waste.

The average bottled water consuming household in Portugal consumes almost 1000 bottles per year generating 250 kg CO2 footprint, 50 kg of plastic waste and 2000 L of water wasted. This is crazy considering that 99.5% of public tap water in Portugal is safe to drink according to strict EU standards. The main reasons for choosing bottled water given by consumers is taste and concerns about the quality of tap water.

TAPP Water founded in Barcelona, Spain has spent the past 7 years working on better alternatives for bottled water for southern Europe. The main focus is to provide great tasting water and to improve the perception by ensuring that common contaminants from old pipes are filtered. TAPP 2 Twist is an easy to install water filter that attaches directly to the faucet for clean tasty drinking water all year around. As an added advantage it also prevents limescale from forming in coffee machines, kettles and kitchenware.

This week El Corte Ingles made the TAPP 2 Twist filters available to consumers in Portugal as part of its social responsibility effort to reduce plastic waste and climate change impact. With the biggest department store in Portugal and one of the top ecommerce websites El Corte Ingles reaches millions of consumers.
