Frequently Asked Questions about Reverse Osmosis
What is a reverse osmosis system?
A reverse osmosis (RO) system is an advanced water filtration technology that uses a semi-permeable membrane to remove very small contaminants. It can filter particles as small as 0.0001 microns, including dissolved solids, heavy metals, and microplastics, delivering highly purified water.
Does reverse osmosis also remove minerals from the water?
Yes. Reverse osmosis removes not only harmful contaminants but also naturally occurring minerals such as calcium and magnesium. While this results in very pure water, it also means the water may lose some beneficial mineral content and taste complexity.
What is the difference between a water filter and a reverse osmosis system?
A standard water filter (like activated carbon filters) improves taste and reduces common contaminants such as chlorine, lead, and microplastics, while retaining beneficial minerals. In contrast, reverse osmosis is a more intensive process that removes a broader range of impurities—including dissolved salts—but also strips out minerals and typically requires more complex installation.
Does reverse osmosis produce waste water?
Yes. Reverse osmosis systems generate wastewater during the filtration process. A portion of the incoming water is used to flush away the concentrated contaminants trapped by the membrane, which can make RO less water-efficient compared to other filtration solutions.
